TO ENSURE LONG-LASTING PLEASURE: SMOKE AND MAINTENANCE TIPS
Fill your pipe loosely at the bottom and pack it more firmly at the top until there is a light draw resistance. VAUEN pipes are pre-treated and therefore do not need to be broken-in. Light the entire surface of the tobacco with a match or a lighter that has a suitable flame for pipes, one that is not too large (no turbo lighters!). Press the tobacco down lightly with a tamper. Take it easy when smoking and smoke slowly, so that the tobacco just barely remains lit. This is ensures the best tobacco flavour, and your pipe will thank you for it. Occasionally check the temperature of the bowl with the back of your hand to ensure it doesn’t get too hot. While smoking, press down the lit tobacco with a tamper to ensure a light draw resistance. If your pipe goes out repeatedly towards the end of your smoke, go ahead and dump out the remaining damp tobacco into an ash tray. Otherwise, too much heat can develop and the pipe is more likely to burn, especially on the bottom and at the air hole. The tobacco should form a consistent cake from top to bottom. The cake helps to retains the good flavour of the tobacco as well as protecting the wood.
Once you have finished your smoke, remove the ashes by knocking your pipe against the palm of your hand or against the cork in an ash tray. Remove the mouthpiece from the stem of the pipe by twisting it (you can reconnect it in the same fashion). Remove the filter. Clean the hole of the mouthpiece and the stem with a pipe cleaner. Blow through the pipe. Do not refill the hot pipe. If you wish to smoke again, use a different pipe. The VAUEN pipe tamper has a spoon-shaped scraper for cleaning the air channel in the stem of the pipe. Make sure the air channel is clean all the way to the tobacco chamber and that it retains its original diameter – this will increase your smoking pleasure. Clean the pipe once more with a cleaner. Let it cool down without a filter in place. Do not forget to replace the filter before your next smoke. If the tobacco cake in the pipe bowl becomes too thick (1 mm is sufficient), insert a pipe scraper and turn it to cut the cake down to its usual thickness. Polish your pipe with a wool cloth from time to time while it is still warm (if needed using beeswax). If the mouthpiece fits too tightly in the stem, coat it with graphite (pencil leads). If it is too loose, allow the bowl to cool down without the mouthpiece in place.
ACCESSORIES
VAUEN offers over 500 different pipes and a large range of accessories. From tobacco to tampers.
EXTRA-TIP
If the mouthpiece plug sits too firmly in the stem, brush it with graphite (pencil). If it is loose, leave the still warm, smoked pipe without a mouthpiece to cool.
FILTERS
The highly effective 9 mm activated carbon filter, Dr. Perl junior, is ideal for VAUEN pipes. With environmentally friendly, hygienic, chlorine-free paper. The surface of the activated carbon in a filter is almost as large as the wing of a jumbo jet. This ensures that moisture, tar, nicotine, and other toxins are largely filtered out of the smoke. The taste, and thus the flavour, of the tobacco are not affected by the filter. You can recognise the Dr. Perl junior by its red package. Recommendation: use a new filter every time you fill your pipe. Because only the best filter effect will guarantee pure smoking pleasure.
CONEX
To ensure the filter fits perfectly in your pipe, the VAUEN pipes are equipped with the Conex system, a special construction of the mouthpiece stem. When inserting the filter, press it lightly into the cone. The best fit ensures that no unfiltered smoke escapes between the filter and the cone.
