Constant research and developments led to the further improvement of the Dr. Perl junior activated carbon filter to the Dr. Perl junior filter system. This complex filter system was developed in order to provide smokers with additional filtration and less draw resistance, thereby ensuring a more pleasant smoke. The differing number of holes in the white and blue caps creates a pressure drop inside the filter, leading to a greater swirling of the smoke. This means the activated carbon works more effectively and can remove more toxins. The filter system works best when it is inserted properly: the blue cap must face the mouthpiece and the white cap must face the bowl! White cap: more effective moisture reduction thanks to the diffusion channel. The ring-shaped channel of holes catches the smoke and moisture is collected in the porous ceramic material. This has a positive effect on the filtration. Activated carbon: improved reduction of toxins thanks to optimised activated carbon pores. More pores and an optimised ratio of different sized pores in the activated carbon increase the reduction of toxins in the tobacco smoke. And that applies to more than just the pipe and tobacco: the health advantages of a high performing filter also play an important role for our Dr. Perl junior customers. But this is one point that needs further clarification. Highly effective filtration can only take place when the activated carbon filter fits tightly. But how can you recognise whether the filter is functioning properly even though you cannot see it? You will notice the difference in the following details: the more activated carbon pieces in a filter, the more the smoke is diverted through the pores of the activated carbon, which absorbs the toxins, in order to pass through the filter (see Fig. 1). The more pores the carbon pieces contain, the better the filtration. If, however, the filter contains fewer carbon pieces, the smoke can pass through unhindered. The draw resistance is lower, but so is the absorption (see Fig. 2).
Dr. Perl junior isn’t made with just any activated carbon: extensive research was conducted exclusively for VAUEN in order to develop a highly activated and high quality carbon. Special processing creates numerous pores of different sizes in the carbon pieces. The more pores there are, the better the filtration. Only the perfect ratio of small and larger pores ensures the best absorption of nicotine and condensation particles.
An examination of the activated carbon pieces under a microscope reveals the “craters”, “caves” and “channels” of the individual pieces through which the smoke must pass. Nicotine and condensate are largely absorbed by the carbon.
The longer the “detours” the smoke takes through this labyrinth of activated carbon, the better the filtration effect. The surface of the activated carbon pieces in a Dr. Perl junior filter corresponds to the size of two tennis courts. The white, chlorine-free filter paper and the white cap of the filter are extremely absorbent and therefore take in excess moisture. At the same time, the numerous holes in the caps ensure an even distribution of the smoke vapour over the activated carbon pieces and achieves the best filter effect of the carbon and paper.
